New Delhi, Feb 16: Delhi Police arrested Prof SAR Geelani in the wee hours of Tuesday. He was put behind the bars at 3 AM, after being booked under the charges of sedition, criminal conspiracy and unlawful assembly. The arrest was made hours after he was detained and grilled for several rounds. During the course of interrogation, it was revealed that he deliberately planned the Afzal Guru-commemoration event to portray it as a judicial murder.
“Geelani has been booked under IPC sections 124A (sedition), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 149 (unlawful assembly),” said New Delhi DCP Jatin Narwal. The arrest comes a day after Delhi’s Patiala House Court extended the police custody of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Students’ Union President Kanhaiya Kumar, who has been booked under sedition charges for allegedly delivering anti-national speech and raising anti-India and Kashmir secessionist slogans.
Geelani had organized an event at Press Club of India on February 10 commemorating the hanging of Afzal Guru on its third anniversary. During the program, Geelani had allegedly called the legally sanctioned execution as an act of “judicial murder.”
The controversy was triggered when a group of students organized a rally on the evening of February 9 raising anti-India slogans. Subsequently, the activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) launched protests in the national capital demanding crackdown of the JNU students who were involved in the anti-national procession.
