Meerut, September 14: With an aspiration to rejoin regular duty in the Indian Navy, Praveen Teotia, a resident of Bhatola village in Bulandshahr, with a damaged lung and partial hearing aid, earned a medal in the 72 km-long Khardung La marathon. The marathon was held on September 9 in Ladakh for completing the race in 12.5 hours. The 32-year-old was hit by bullets in the lung and ear in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack. After being disabled by the bullets, Teotia was given a non-active job in the Navy but this did not please him and he took an oath to prove his fitness. The Shaurya Chakra winner started to participate in marathons and proved his worth on September 9. Teotia was quoted by Times of India saying,” I was shot and even doctors didn’t have any hope but I didn’t lose hope and recovered in five months. My hearing was impaired though.” Also Read - ViraI Video: ITBP Officer Performs Surya Namaskar in Sub-Zero Temperature At 18,000 ft in Ladakh | Watch
After the Mumbai attacks, once a commando, Teotia was given the post of an officer. Not a huge fan of the desk job, the former commander applied for the expedition of Navy mountaineering but was shown the exit doors on medical terms. He met a marathon runner Pervin Batliwala who pushed him for the long distance marathon training. Batliwala was taken aback by the will power of Teotia. He said he has only met a few people like him and completing the Khardung La marathon is not a piece of cake as the oxygen level there is low and it is next to impossible for someone with damaged lungs.
Teotia began his marathon training in 2014. He participated in the 2015 Mumbai Half Marathon under a different name as he was unaware of how the Navy would react if in case he failed. Since 2014 he has participated in many marathons. Just recently, in the month of March, he took part in the Jaipur Half Iron Man Triathlon that includes swimming and bicycle and running.
