FACT Check: No, Railways NOT Planning to Trim Overtime, Travel Allowances of 13 Lakh Employees

New Delhi: Reports which claimed that the railway ministry may deduct the salary of its employees by 50 per cent were false. Notably, a post was going viral on social media platforms such as Facebook, Whatsapp, and Twitter, stating that the Railway Ministry was mulling over the option to cut the salaries and pension of employees for the year 2020-21. It was also asserted that the ministry was compelled to take such action to cover the losses incurred due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown. However, when we conducted a fact check, the viral post turned out to be fake.

CLAIM: Railway Ministry has decided not to pay or hold salaries and pensions to their employees in 2020-21 due to a financial crunch

FACT: The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has dismissed the viral claim “The claim is False. No such move is being discussed or contemplated by Ministry of Railways”.

Indian Railways had also refuted the claims, calling it completely false. “No such move has been discussed or been contemplated by the government”, it clarified.

Don’t Fall Prey to Fake Reports, Rumours

India.com advises people to not to fall prey to rumour mongering and do not spread unverified news on social media, which triggers panic among people.

Earlier this year in August, similar reports had emerged.  Back then as well, the government had dismissed the report. Taking to Twitter, Press Information Bureau (PIB) had clarified that there is no such proposal with the Central government and the report was false and baseless. It had asserted that payment under these facilities will continue to be made as per the existing norms. Indian Railways has around 13 lakh employees and roughly 15 lakh pensioners.
