Asansol: Fire started at Asansol’s Churulia private coal mine on Monday. The coal mine has been closed for several days and the had caught fire a few days back as well. The area in which the coal mine is located had also caved in because of heavy rains in the region. Smoke billowed out from the coal mine and the fire is still raging.

Smoke in the region also forced schools to be shut down and caused respiratory problems among the residents. Due to smoke, the surrounding air became heavy and made it difficult for the people to breathe. The fire department along with the police officials are trying to bring the blaze under control.

On the other hand, Jharia coal mine fire has been a topic of discussion since long. A few days back, Union Coal Secretary Indrajit Singh said a fresh survey of families living in the coal mine fire zone of Jharia would be conducted for shifting the affected people to safe places. In the 2004 survey, 56000 families were identified, but the number of families was found to have been mounted to 1.25 lakh in the 2009 survey, official sources said.
