Delhi, September 2: In the first sentencing in the Common wealth Games street lighting scam, Managing Director of private firm Sweka Powertech Engineers Pvt Ltd, TP Singh, and four MCD officials were sentenced on Wednesday, to six years and four years of jail term respectively. The jail term was served by a special CBI court in Delhi.
All five were convicted in the case on Monday. The four Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials include former superintendent engineer D K Sugan, executive engineer O P Mahala, accountant Raju V and tender clerk Gurcharan Singh. The officials were convicted for criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery for purpose of cheating and were charged under sections of Prevention of Corruption Act. On Tuesday, the CBI had sough severe punishment for the convicts who conspired together in a scam worth Rs 1.4 crore in the 2010 Common Wealth Games held in Delhi. CBI prosecutor had argued in the court that officials should be awarded at least seven years of jail time for causing the huge loss to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
The MCD officials had awarded the contract to Sweka Powertech- a Rajouri based firm- for upgradation of street lighting on the roads that come under the Corporation’s jurisdiction. A tender was floated by the corporation for a stretch of 101.56 km of roads and the contract was given to Sweka in 2008. The case was registered against the accused on June 16, 2010.
