New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Emmanuel Macron on his massive victory in the French presidential elections and said he looks forward to working with him.Taking to microblogging site Twitter, PM Narendra Modi wrote,”Congratulations to Emmanuel Macron for an emphatic victory in the French Presidential election.”
“I look forward to working closely with President-elect Emmanuel Macron to further strengthen India-France ties,” PM tweeted further. 39-year-old Macron defeated Marine Le Pen and created history by becoming the youngest president in the 59-year history of the French Fifth Republic.

According to the reports, President-Elect Emmanuel Macron has secured victory by garnering 62.89 percent votes whereas his rival Marine Le Pen grabbed 37.11percent votes. Earlier, US President Donald Trump had also extended his best wishes to Macron and tweeted,”Congratulations to Emmanuel Macron on his big win today as the next President of France. I look very much forward to working with him!”

The White House later issued a statement congratulating Macron. “We congratulate President-elect Macron and the people of France on their successful presidential election,” White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said. “We look forward to working with the new President and continuing our close cooperation with the French government,” Spicer said in a statement.
Macron’s victory marked the third time in six months — following elections in Austria and the Netherlands — that European voters shot down far-right populists who wanted to restore borders across Europe.
