New Delhi: In another development, the Karnataka Police on Sunday said that the fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari has been arrested in South Africa and is being brought to India by a team of officials, including senior IPS officers from Karnataka.

Wanted in India for over 200 cases of heinous crimes, including murder and extortion, Pujari was on the run for over 15 years. He was recently deported to Senegal from where he had jumped bail last year, and extradited.

“(We are) coming with him from Senegal. Now in Paris. (We are) coming by Air France and (would be) there (in India) by midnight,” one of the police officials, part of the team, told news agency PTI. Pujari is likely to reach India by Monday morning.

Pujari, who had parted ways with underworld don Chhota Rajan, had jumped bail from Senegal in 2019 and then had escaped to South Africa. In South Africa also, Pujari was involved in drug trafficking and extortion.

However, sources at Indian intelligence stated that Pujari was hiding with a false identity of Anthony Fernandes, a Burkina Faso passport holder, in a remote village in South Africa.

Sources further added that following the persistent efforts by the Government of India, Pujari was extradited from Senegal on February 22, 2020, pursuant to an extradition request made by India in early 2019.
