New Delhi, April 26: Special DGP (Law and Order) Kuladhar Saikia, 59, a Fulbright Scholar and winner of the Sahitya Akademi award will be posted as the new Director-General of the Police (DGP), Assam. Saikia is set to replace Mukesh Sahay as the State Police Chief on May 1. Saikia, a PhD scholar from IIT, is known among the bests in the field of Literature. He had won the literary honour- the Sahitya Akademi award in 2015 for his book titled ‘Akakhor Sobi Aaru Anyanya Galpa (Picture of the sky and other tales)’.
Saikia will not be the first DGP who has won the Sahitya Akademi Award. Current and former DGP of Assam Meghalaya cadre had won the literary award. But he may be the first DGP in the country to have huge qualifications and awards such as Sahitya Akademi award, Fulbright fellowship (for community leadership) from University of Pennsylvania and a PhD Scholar from IIT- Guwahati, done his research in crime and development.
The 59-year-old is in line with the five IPS officers to take charge of the DGP’s post after the retirement of Sahay’s on April 30. According to reports, among the five Saikia’s resume was heavy for the post as he was involved in many anti-terror operations. He closely involved in anti-terror operations, including Operation Bajrang and Operation Rhino against the United Liberation Front of Asom in the 1990s. Much of his stint as superintendent of police was in militant hotbeds such as Nalbari and Kokrajar districts, reports The Hindu.
According to Saikia’s colleagues, He is a very kind officer even in the most difficult situations. He took an awareness initiative named Prahari in the early 2000s to tackle witchcraft-related crimes. Saikia has often put his field experience into the books through his stories which have won awards. “Writing has helped improve my policing,” he reportedly said.
