New Delhi: Union Minister Smriti Irani launched an attack on Congress President Rahul Gandhi and said the Gandhi-Vadra (Robert) family stood for ‘parivarik bhrashtachar’.
Referring to a media report citing land deals in Rahul’s name, she said, “Reports have suggested that H L Pahwa was suitably financed and supported by C C Thampi; investigation have found a money trail between Thampi and Pahwa amounting to Rs 54 crore.”
Thampi, she said, was someone whose name figured in a probe with regard to not only a petroleum deal under UPA but also financial violation with regard to a land deal in Delhi-NCR amounting to Rs280 cr.
As to what puts Thampi further under the scanner, she said, was his relationship with arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari. Bhandari is a close aide of Robert Vadra and is also under investigation for defence deals and “his desperate desire to be a party to the ill-gotten fruits of corruption during the UPA regime”.
The new facts which have come to the fore clearly establish a relationship between Rahul Gandhi and arms dealer Bhandari, she said.
She said that Bhandari’s involvement was also found in how Rafale deal documents were stolen from the Ministry of Defence and information was provided to defence contractors. Bhandari’s name also figured in Vadra’s benami land deals in London, she alleged.
Seemingly joining the dots, Irani said that Rahul’s intervention in the defence preparedness of the country “stems from his pursuit not only of individual politics but his personal commercial interests, his personal family interests.”
“It’s Rahul Gandhi who is hiding behind Robert Vadra now, saale sahab khud janata ko bataein ki raksha saudon mein unki (RG) itni ruchi kyun hai,vo bataein ki kya desh ki suraksha ko chand rupayon ke liye, land ke liye, Rahul Gandhi ne kya shaheed karne ka prayas kiya (Rahul Gandhi should tell the nation why he is so interested in the country’s defence deals. He should explain if for a few rupees, for land, he put the country’s security at stake)?”
