New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency Gautam Gambhir filed a defamation case against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday. The action came in response to the allegations of distributing offensive pamphlets levelled against him by his opponent Atishi.
“I condemn what has happened. I am from a family where I have been taught to respect women. I didn’t know CM Arvind Kejriwal would stoop so low. I have filed a defamation case,” he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
Earlier on Thursday, the cricketer-turned-politician had accused Kejriwal of orchestrating this row to frame him and vowed to withdraw his candidature if proven guilty. He also challenged the AAP chief to quit from the post of Delhi CM if the allegations levelled against him are proved wrong.
In a press conference by senior AAP leaders, including Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, on Thursday afternoon, Gambhir was accused of indulging in a maligning campaign by distributing pamphlets with derogatory language against AAP candidate from East Delhi Atishi.
While reading out the contents of the pamphlet, Atishi broke down. However, she continued reading out to the media persons present. “BJP people and Gautam Gambhir circulated this pamphlet in every household along with the morning newspaper… This shows how low they can stoop to win elections… This pamphlet distributed by Gambhir’s team reads- Know your candidate Atishi Marlena. She is married to a Christian from Andhra Pradesh that is a beef eater. She is a good example of a mixed breed… What kind of education policies can she make if she has worked only as a primary school teacher…” she said.
Delhi is scheduled to go to Lok Sabha Elections 2019 on May 12. The results of the seven parliamentary constituencies will be announced on May 23.
