Bengaluru, November 6: A case of rape has been registered against a bus driver in Bengaluru police station for allegedly raping a 19-year-old nurse on Friday.
According to the Bengaluru police, the incident of rape happened in a moving bus in which the nurse (name withheld) was raped by the driver Hoskote town in Bengaluru’s eastern outskirts. The police said that the accused was also accompanied by the cleaner.
“We have arrested the accused — Ravi, 26, with bus cleaner Manjunath, 23 — on a complaint by the victim that she was raped by the driver when she was alone in the bus on Thursday night,” Bengaluru rural additional superintendent of police SR Ramesh said to the media.
The attack took place when the young woman boarded the bus at Sulibele to go to work at a nursing home in Hoskote, 30km from the city centre.
“The accused asked the cleaner to drive the bus while he raped her and dumped her later on the roadside at Nagagondanahalli. When she narrated the incident to doctors at a private hospital, police were called to take her complaint,” Ramesh said.
After recording her version of the incident in Kannada, police swung into action and arrested the two people and seized the bus. The bus was registered in the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
After the incident, Karnataka Home Minister, G Parmeshwar, said, “Rape crimes will not be tolerated, appropriate action will be taken”.

A similar gang rape case took place in the year 2012 which is known as Delhi gang rape case in which a 23-year-old physiotherapist intern was gang-raped in a private bus, in which she was travelling with her male friend.
The six accused in the case were arrested and were given capital punishment. However a juvenile present during the gang rape was sent to children home according to the law of the land.
After the incident a huge public protest took place in New Delhi on 21 December 2012 at India Gate and Raisina Hill, the official residence of the President of India. Thousands of protesters clashed with the police and battled with Rapid Action Force units.
Violence against women has become a prominent topic of discussion in India which is rising since 2008.
In Delhi, the national capital of India, around 7,124 cases of crime against women have been registered in police station across Delhi till August 2015. However none of the accused is convicted till date.
