Panjim, May 4: Controversial legislator of Goa, Atanasio Monserrate, better known as Babush Monserrate, has been booked by state police on charges of allegedly raping a minor girl. The chargesheet was made against him on Wednesday night. Monserrate has called it a political conspiracy and accused the police of acting under governmental pressure.

Monserrate represents the St Cruz constituency of Goa. He had also contested unsuccessfully from Panjim after Manohar Parrikar’s resignation from the seat.

Panjim’s Deputy Superintendent of Police, Serafin Dias confirmed the filing of chargesheet against Monserrate. Dias claimed that a 16-year-old girl, residing in Caranzalem had registered a complaint against the politician of sexually molesting her. The victim was employed by Monserrate in his Hallmark store on request of her parents.

Monserrate is an established electoral player in Goa politics. A former Congress strongman, he broke away from the party in 2010 after the then Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane excluded him from his cabinet for preparing a development plan which allegedly favoured the land mafia. In 2012, he contested the St Cruz seat independently and succeeded in maintaining his stronghold. (ALSO READ: Another Goa minister accused of faking educational qualification)
