The upcoming extension of Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Green Line, connecting Nagasandra to Madavara (BIEC) on Tumakuru Road, is set to launch commercial operations in October. As part of Phase II, the extension includes three new stations: Manjunathnagar, Chikkabidarakallu, and Madavara, enhancing connectivity for commuters. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited’s Managing Director announced that trial operations on the 3 km segment will soon kick off, paving the way for the line’s official opening after safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) expected by September.
This expansion will significantly increase the metro network’s reach in Bangalore to 76 kilometers, catering to the city’s growing population. With service frequency adjustments based on demand, the extension aims to accommodate an additional 25,000 to 30,000 passengers daily, offering a more efficient and convenient transportation option for residents and visitors alike.
Construction at Madavara is nearing completion, with traction power supply established at two stations and soon to be finalized at Madavara. Officials are gearing up for trial runs in the upcoming weeks. The extension to Madavara will offer direct access to the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre, a key venue for various expos. It will enhance Metro connectivity for travellers from Nelamangala and surrounding areas.
Despite initial deadlines, project completion was delayed due to construction setbacks, land acquisition issues with NICE authorities, and the impact of the pandemic.
In addition to the Green Line extension, the BMRCL is actively working on launching the Yellow Line, spanning 19.15 kilometers from RV Road to Bommasandra. The Yellow Line is projected to commence operations by the year’s end, with a planned service of at least eight trains operating at 15-minute intervals.
