Mumbai: In the Goregaon building collapse that killed three on Sunday, police have arrested the contractor and supervisor, said ANI on Monday. The duo was also presented before court which sent them to police custody till December 29. (Also read: Goregaon Forest Fire Looks Suspicious, Says Minister)

The incident had taken place at 9.15 AM in Motilal Nagar when the slab of the two-floor building gave way during construction, a police official said. The structure was part of a chawl of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), he added.

Several teams of the fire brigade and police personnel were rushed to the spot for the rescue operation. At least three fire engines, one rescue van and an ambulance were deployed for the operation, the official said.

A team of NDRF was also pressed into service to carry out the rescue operation, according to news agency ANI. At least nine people who were trapped inside the debris were later rescued and rushed to Siddharth Hospital in Goregaon.

Twenty-seven-year-old Shravan Kumar Goremandal was declared dead on arrival while Subhash Chavan (38) and an unidentified person also succumbed to injuries later, the official said.

Three of the injured, Mangal Bansa (35), Munna Shaikh (30) and Shekhar(35), were admitted in the hospital, while the others discharged after treatment, he said. An accidental death report was registered at the Goregaon Police station.

In October, one person died and five were injured after an under construction building collapsed in Johnu area of Udhampur. The Udhampur building collapse has come a few days after at least one person was killed and 14 others were injured after an under-construction building in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur collapsed.
