Ahmedabad, December 14: The Congress on Thursday launched a strong attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for holding a roadshow after casting his vote in the second phase of Gujarat Assembly elections. Terming the roadshow a violation of model code of conduct, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said, “Election Commission has become a captive puppet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party.”
Alleging double standards by the Commission, Gujarat Congress in-charge Ashok Gehlot said, “PM Modi’s roadshow after casting vote is a clear case of violation of the model code of conduct. The EC seems to be working under pressure from the Prime Minister and PMO.” (Follow live updates here)
Hitting out at the BJP, Surjewala said, “The way BJP is campaigning in Gujarat, it’s clear that their defeat is inevitable. Reality is, the sinking ship of Narendra Modi’s campaign is being saved by ECI. Gujarat Election will not be decided by photo-ops, sea planes and road shows. It will be decided on progress and issues related to development.”
Senior Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram also questioned the Election Commission over Modi’s roadshow in Sabarmati. “Allowing a roadshow of PM on voting day is a gross violation of code of conduct. Modi, whose residential address falls in Sabarmati constituency, exercised his voting right from booth number 115 here in Ranip. BJP’s sitting MLA Arvind Patel is up against Congress’ Jitubhai Patel from the Sabarmati seat.
Earlier, the Ahmedabad Police had denied permission to BJP and Congress for holding roadshow citing security, law and order reasons. On the last day of campaigning, December 12, Modi travelled in seaplane and visited Ambaji temple in Banaskantha district.
The two-phased Gujarat polls will conclude today with 93 seats going to polls today. The first phase of Gujarat polls was held on December 9. The counting of votes and results will be declared on December 18.
