New Delhi, December 12: With just two days left for the second phase of Gujarat Assembly elections, Congress President-elect Rahul Gandhi hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the condition of Dalits in the poll-bound state. Citing that there has been no employment opportunities, education facilities for Dalits, Rahul raked up the Una incident asking who will take up the responsibility for it.
Asking 14th question in ‘question a day’ series, Rahul tweeted, “No land, employment, health, education facilities for Dalits in Gujarat. They have been only faced insecurity in the state. Modi ji is mum on Una incident but who will take the responsibility. Many laws are being framed in the name of Dalits but who will implement them.”
The tagline of his posers to the prime minister is “22 salon ka hisaab, Gujarat mange jawaab (Gujarat demands answers for 22 years of BJP rule)”. Rahul raised the Una incident in which upper-caste cow vigilantes flogged Dalit men for skinning a dead cow in July 2016. Violent protests were undertaken by Dalits with incidents of bus burning, clashes and highway blockades being reported from Saurashtra and north Gujarat.
Ahead of the polls, Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani had declared that he would ask his followers not to vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party. He would contest as an independent from Vadgam constituency in Banaskantha. Mevani would enjoy the Congress’s support as the party has not fielded any candidate from the seat.
The first phase of Gujarat polls was held on December 9 which witnessed 68 per cent voter turnout. The second phase of Gujarat polling is on December 14. The results will be declared on December 18.
