New Delhi, May 21: A Dalit ragpicker was beaten to death by some unidentified workers of a factory in Rajkot on Sunday morning. A video of two men thrashing 40-year-old Mukesh Savji Vaniya has gone viral on social media where the victim could be heard pleading with the two men to let him go.

The police said that Vaniya, his wife and another woman named Savita were in the area picking up rags around the factory when two men came over and got into an argument with them. The two even thrashed his wife and the other woman who fled the spot to save themselves.

The men tied Vaniya with a rope and thrashed him. When his wife and the Savita reached the spot with a group of men, they found Vaniya lying on the floor. He was taken to a Rajkot Civil Hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.

“The exact reason of the altercation has not become clear so far. But the complainant has alleged that it was something related to picking rags around the factory…” Sub-Inspector RG Sindhu was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

Dalit rights crusader Jignesh Mevani took to Twitter to condemn the incident and said, “Mukesh Vaniya belonging to a schduled caste was miserably thrashed and murdered by owners in Rajkot and his wife was brutally beaten up #GujaratIsNotSafe4Dalit.
