Ahmedabad, Dec 26: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vijay Rupani on Tuesday sworn in as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for the second time. Vijay Rupani was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Gujarat Governor Om Prakash Kohli at the Gandhinagar Sachivalaya Ground. Along with Rupani, nine Cabinet ministers and 10 Minister of States also took the oath. Nitin Patel was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat.

The Gujarat Cabinet will have 20 ministers. Watching the swearing-in ceremony were Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah, BJP veteran L K Advani, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and former Gujarat chief minister Shankersinh Vaghela.

The BJP on December 22 again picked Vijay Rupani for the post of Gujarat’s chief minister. Rupani had replaced Anandiben Patel as Chief Minister of Gujarat in August 2016. He began his political career in 1987 when he was elected to the Rajkot Municipal Corporation. Rupani was a Cabinet minister with portfolios like transport and labour and employment in the Anandiben Patel regime.

The BJP retained power in Gujarat, edging past the half-way mark to clinch the sixth term in government. BJP bagged 99 seats, whereas the Congress put up an improved performance and secured 77 seats. Congress allies also got three more. The NCP, which fought alone, got one seat and Independents won two.
