Reports say that out of the total village panchayats, around 295 were declared ‘Samras’ as villagers chose their sarpanchs unanimously ahead of the polls, the Gujarat State Election Commission had said.
Though gram panchayat polls are not contested on party symbols, it is said that candidates are invariably aligned to political parties. Thus, the gram panchayat elections proved to be the next big test for political parties, after the high-voltage Assembly elections in which the ruling BJP had defeated Congress by a slender margin.
Earlier on February 6, results for 1127 village panchayats were declared in which the state BJP had claimed that the saffron party has emerged victorious on 75 to 80 per cent of gram panchayats.
On the other hand, the Congress had said that over 70 per cent elected sarpanchs as well as panchayat members are associated with the opposition party. It had claimed that the rural voter has put his trust in the party as the BJP government has “failed” to address the core issues such as irrigation, employment and Minimum Support Price (MSP) affecting rural population.
