New Delhi: Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor on Tuesday refuted allegations that he instigated attacks on UP and Bihar migrant workers in Gujarat. “Only one incident happened somewhere in Gujarat and I condemn it. If I have threatened anyone, I will go to jail myself,” said Thakor, while speaking to reporters today.

Furthermore he added,”Gujarat belongs to everyone. It is as much yours as it is mine.”

On Monday, Neeraj Kumar, Janata Dal (United) Member of Legislative Council (MLC) had sent a two-page open letter to Congress President Rahul Gandhi, blaming his party for the violence against Biharis. “You appointed your Gujarat MLA Alpesh Thakor as one of the national secretaries in-charge of Bihar and his outfit Gujarat Kshatriya Thakor Sena is driving out migrant Biharis,” Kumar alleged in the letter.

Gujarat Minister Pradeepsinh Jadeja, said that that efforts were underway to find out whether “it is a conspiracy by those who are out of power in Gujarat since the last 22 years”.

However, senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel had defended Thakor and alleged that the BJP government was trying to politicise the issue. Speaking to media in Bharuch, Patel, a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat, said that Jadeja was trying to politicise the issue.

“I think he was trying to politicise the issue. The way he was saying it, I wonder if there was a conspiracy behind what is happening. Alpesh Thakor has clearly denied his role in these attacks on migrant workers,” Patel asserted.

Since the rape of a 14-month-old girl in Sabarkantha district on September 28 and the arrest of a labourer hailing from Bihar for the crime, six districts, most of them in north Gujarat, have seen sporadic incidents of violence against Hindi-speaking people. Till now 431 people, mostly members of the Kshatriya Thakor Sena, have been taken into custody and 56 FIRs registered in connection with the attacks.
