Guntur (Andhra Pradesh), May 4: A 60-year-old man accused of raping a girl child in Guntur was found hanging from a tree in Dachepalli area on Friday morning. The deceased, Subbaiah, had reportedly told relatives on the phone that he was going to kill himself.  Police had constituted 15 teams to look for Subbaiah, a rickshaw-puller, who had been booked under POCSO.

The nine-year-old girl’s rape on Wednesday had led to protests in Guntur with agitated crowds demanding instant justice. Villagers blocked the highway near the village on Thursday morning, causing an 18-km-long traffic jam, said NDTV. Special forces were deployed but they couldn’t deter the protesters who beat up Subbaiah’s son. They also wanted to raze the house of the accused, said reports. Subbaiah lived in the girl’s neighbourhood. He allegedly lured her with chocolates and raped her. Police said he dropped her home after threatening to kill her if she told anyone. Once she got home, the girl complained of pain and her mother noticed she was bleeding. At the hospital, doctors confirmed sexual assault before performing a surgery to stop the bleeding. The girl is still recuperating in the hospital.

Appala Naidu, Superintendent of Police, Guntur, told ANI,  “The accused has fled away. There were few injuries on the victim’s body.”
“Everyone is disturbed and upset. So there were people from all communities demanding justice for the child,” said Guntur collector Kona Shashidhar to NDTV.
