Ahmedabad: Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor sat on a fast on Thursday, apparently to make amends for how the image of Gujarat has suffered a beating in the past few days in the light of the migrant exodus. Speaking to ANI, Thakor said, “I am doing ‘Sadbhavna Upvas’ because the image my Gujarat is being maligned. There is no place for violence in Gujarat. Nobody was attacked here, the environment has been vitiated due to social media. We neither support regionalism nor will we take it forward.” (Also read: ‘Will go to Jail Myself if I Threatened Anyone’)
Interestingly, Thakor had announced a ‘Sadbhavna Upvas’ for October 8 to seek justice for the 14-month-old girl who was raped in Sabarkantha district. Then, he had said, the idea was to awaken the conscience of those who were “still silent” over the rape of a girl belonging to Thakor community.
Meanwhile, Congress President Rahul Gandhi has reportedly spoken to Thakor, a prominent leader of Kshatriya Thakor Sena. Last week, migrants, particularly those from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, were allegedly attacked and asked to leave the state after a native of Bihar was arrested for the toddler’s rape. It was alleged that the members of ‘Thakor’s outfit staged protests in the northern part of the state and demanded that people from other states should not be given jobs in Gujarat.
Thakor refuted claims of any involvement in the violence and said that if he was found guilty of threatening anyone, he would surrender before the police. However, BJP national spokesperson Zafar Islam alleged that the incident had exposed “the Congress and Thakor community”. He said, “It is not an allegation. In the video of October 7, Alpesh Thakor and his entire Thakor community were seen provoking people with full aggression and threat. The same thing was done by the Congress in the Bhima Koregaon incident. I demand the suspension of Alpesh Thakor from the party.”
