Gurugram, March 31: In a major development, shops selling meat products reopened in several parts of Gurugram on Thursday after police offered protection to them. As per earlier reports, the Shiv Sena on Tuesday had forced the shutting down of at least 500 meat shops in Gurugram, including KFC outlets as over 200 party workers in Haryana entered Gurugram and demanded the shutting down of shops till Navratris get over. Moreover, they had also threatened the meat and chicken shop owners with notices asking them to keep their shops shut on Tuesdays.

As quoted by Indian Express, a meat shop owner said that after seeing the number of men who came on Tuesday, the shop owners went to the Gurgaon City police station and demanded protection. “We had all closed our shops fearing backlash from the “party workers” claiming to belong to the Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal and Hindu Kranti Dal,” he said.

Meanwhile, a police officer informed that no complaint or case has been filed regarding the matter, but as the shop owners wanted protection 5 policemen have been posted in the area. The development was confirmed to Indian Express by the Commissioner of Police Sandeep Khirwar who said that the ‘Shiv Sainiks’ had been questioned on Thursday, regarding notices they had circulated in the market wherein they claimed that the police, along with social organisations, would conduct investigation and penalize those who refused to down their shutters for Navratri.

He further added that the party workers have been ordered to not create any further trouble and if they do not abide by it, action will be taken against them. However, some shops in Sadar Bazar continued to remain shut due to fear of backlash.

According to an India Today report, the areas that were targeted by Shiv Sainiks in Gurugram include Palam Vihar, Surat Nagar, Ashok Vihar, Sector 5, 9, Pataudi Chowk, Jacobpura, Sadar Bazaar, Khandsa Anaj Mandi, and also Sector 14 market.
