Chennai (Tamil Nadu): Former Chennai police commissioner S George on Friday blamed the former Deputy Commissioner Jayakumar for diverting the police in the Gutka scam case. Speaking at a press conference, the ex-commissioner said, “There was a Gutka scam. There was some illegal activity going on. Jayakumar who was the then deputy commissioner with the Chennai Police’s Crime Branch visited the spot. He did not report the findings to me and even diverted the police.”

Pleading innocence in the case, he said that he was not the police commissioner when the alleged payments were made. “I was not the Commissioner during the dates on which payments are alleged to have been made and I’m not casting aspersions on other Commissioners who succeeded me. I was reposted on Sept 2016 as the Commissioner,” S George said.

Earlier in the day, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested five people in connection with the alleged gutka scam in Tamil Nadu. Those arrested include promoters of a private gutka company, AV Madhava Rao and Uma Shankar Gupta; food safety and drug administration official P Senthil Murugan; Superintendent of Central Excise Department NK Pandian; and a person named PV Srinivasa Rao. All the accused have been sent to police custody till September 20.

On Wednesday, the investigation agency had conducted raids at 40 locations in the state in connection with the multi-crore gutka scam. “Separate CBI teams conducted simultaneous raids at 40 locations in Tamil Nadu early in the morning in Gutkha scam. The raid is still on,” CBI spokesperson Abhishek Dayal told IANS.
