Salem, Nov 29: Hadiya, the woman who is at the centre of the alleged Love Jihad case in Kerala, spoke out in the media on Wednesday and said that she wanted to meet her husband Shafin Jahan. Hadiya said that she had asked for freedom when she appeared before the Supreme Court on Monday, but is not free yet. “My rights have been curtailed,” Hadiya said while speaking to the media today.

“I am demanding basic rights that every Indian citizen has. It has nothing to do with politics or caste. All I want is to talk to people I like. I asked for freedom from court. I wanted to meet my husband but the fact is that I’m not free till now and that’s the truth,” said Hadiya, who returned to her college today to complete her studies.

Hadiya will continue her studies at the Sivaraj Homeopathy Medical College under her Hindu name Akhila Ashokan, college principal G Kannan said on Tuesday. The principal also said that he won’t let anybody meet the 25-year-old woman except her parents.

On Monday, Hadiya told the court that she wanted to live with her husband, Shafin Jahan.  She told the apex court that she wanted her husband to be her guardian if she was sent to her college to complete her education. The Supreme Court directed that Hadiya be taken to college for her studies and that the college extends the facility of the hostel to her. The court deferred the hearing until the third week of January.

Hadiya had converted to Islam before her marriage with Shafin Jahan. Her father KM Ashokan alleged that  a love jihad controversy was hatched to trick her into the marriage to convert her. The Kerala High Court had annulled the marriage on May 29 after which Shafin Jahan had approached the Supreme Court. After the judgment, the Supreme Court had asked the NIA to investigate the case.
