Uttar Pradesh Election 2022: Hamirpur Assembly constituency will go to the polls on the third phase of the Uttar Pradesh Election scheduled to take place on February 20. Hamirpur Assembly Constituency is currently represented by Yuvraj Singh of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Election, BJP’s Ashok Kumar Singh Chandel had won the Hamirpur seat with a margin of 48,655 votes by defeating Manoj Kumar Prajapati from Samajwadi Party. In 2019, Ashok Kumar Chandel was sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case. In the same year, bypolls to the Hamirpur seat were held where BJP’s Yuvraj Singh had won. Chandel is currently serving time in Agra jail in connection to the case. Interestingly, Congress has fielded his wife – Raj Kumari – from the Hamirpur Assembly seat for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh polls.

Meanwhile, Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party had fielded Ram Prakash Prajapati while BJP had fielded Manoj Kumar Prajapati, a former SP leader, from the Hamirpur seat. Earlier, Gajraj Singh, the Congress candidate from Hamirpur, had left the party to join the Samajwadi Party after his candidature was announced. Later, Congress fielded Raj Kumari from the Hamirpur Assembly seat. Since the 1977 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had won this seat three times while BJP had won two times.

Hamirpur Assembly seat, a part of Hamirpur district, is one of the five assembly constituencies in Hamirpur Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh. The Hamirpur district is bounded by districts Jalaun (Orai), Kanpur, and Fatehpur in north, Banda in east, Mahoba in south and districts of Jhansi and Jalaun on the west. The district has a population of 1,042,374 according to the 2001 census. Till 2011, it was the third least populous district of Uttar Pradesh (out of 71), after Mahoba and Chitrakoot. Two major rivers Yamuna and Betwa meet here. On the banks of river Betwa lies the “Coarse sand” which is exported to many parts in Uttar Pradesh.

• The voting for 403 member-Uttar Pradesh Assembly will be held in seven phases in February-March starting from February 10. Counting of votes will be held on March 10.
• The voting for the first and second phases will be held on February 10 and February 14 on 58 assembly seats across 11 districts and 55 assembly seats in nine districts.
• The polling for 59 assembly seats across 16 districts in the third phase of the Uttar Pradesh election will take place on February 20.
• In the fourth phase, the voting for 60 assembly seats in nine districts on February 23.
• The polling for the fifth phase will be held on February 27 for 60 assembly seats across 11 districts.
• Voting for 57 assembly seats in 10 districts for the sixth phase will be held on March 3.
• The polling for 54 assembly constituencies spread across nine districts will be held in the seventh phase on March 7.
