New Delhi: Hours after the Delhi High Court convicted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in the anti-Sikh riots case, Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for setting up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the 1984 massacre, on Shiromani Akali Dal’s request in 2015.
“I want to thank PM Modi that on Shiromani Akali Dal’s request in 2015 he set up a SIT to probe 1984 massacre. It’s a historic judgement. Wheels of justice have finally moved,” the Union Minister said.
Kaur then went to attack the Congress by saying, “It is Sajjan Kumar today, it will be Jagdish Tytler tomorrow then Kamal Nath and eventually the Gandhi family.”
Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia also targeted the grand old party. He said, “Like in the case of Christian Michel where Congress lawyers were representing him, Congress party senior intervention is done only when some sort of Gandhis’ interest is there. Kapil Sibal’s son Amit Sibal is the main lawyer for Sajjan Kumar.”
The Delhi High Court on Monday convicted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, thereby reversing the judgment of a trial court which had earlier acquitted Kumar in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. Further, the Congress leader has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
The court, while reading the judgement, said, “In the summer of 1947, during partition, several people were massacred. Thirty-seven years later, Delhi was the witness of a similar tragedy. The accused enjoyed political patronage and escaped trial.”
It must be noted that Sajjan Kumar has to surrender by December 31, 2018. (Also Read: SAD Seeks Justice For Families of 1984 Anti-Sikh Riot Victims, Union Minister Badal Detained)
Furthermore, Captain Bhagmal, Girdhari Lal and former Congress councillor Balwan Khokhar have been sentenced to life imprisonment, while Kishan Khokkar and former legislator Mahender Yadav have been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The High Court reversed the 2013 decision of the trial court and held him guilty of the offences of murder, promoting enmity between groups, and defiling public property. The trial court had acquitted Sajjan Kumar in the case, but awarded life term to Khokhar, Bhagmal and Lal, and a three-year jail term to two others – former MLA Mahender Yadav and Kishan Khokhar.
