Haryana girls schools to hire male teachers only over 50 years!

Haryana has been coming up with a whole lot of laws lately. While recently, there was a cow helpline set up in the state to protect cows, the latest move is targeted towards addressing one of the most critical social issues plaguing the state – that of women safety. Haryana has seen one of the highest numbers of sexual crimes against girls and women and the archaic laws of the Khap panchayat in the region have often angered the masses. Despite multiple attempts, the crimes unfortunately have not been curbed and instead, seem to be increasing with the passage of time.

Now, Haryana education committee has come up with a completely crazy and bizarre move which they believe will help protect the younger school going girls from sexual assault to a certain extent. The public and government girls schools in Haryana will now not have any male teachers under 50 years! The male candidates will be given a job in a government school only if they are over the age mark. Also, the teachers applying for transfer are advised to not apply to girls schools if they are under the age limit as their application will not be considered at all! The new policy applies even to many private schools in the state.

According to a statement made by Haryana’s education minister Ram Bilas Sharma, “Any teacher who has not completed 50 years as on June 30, should not opt for girls’ school. Even if any teacher opts for it, he would not be considered for transfer.” Neelam Bhandari, the district education officer added, “This policy has been in effect for a very long time. The recent policy change has only highlighted it and brought it to the forefront of the public eye. The vision of this policy was to improve the distribution of teachers across the state. This measure was taken to protect the interests of the students.”

However, the teachers of both, public and private schools are completely against the move. There are many who believe that this will spread the wrong idea among young girls. It will make girls think that young men absolutely cannot be trusted and the younger generation has no morals. It will also elevate elders in the eyes of the girls which might be detrimental as if a person does have an evil intention towards the girls, age does not stop them in any manner. Just because a man has crossed 50 years of age, it does not mean that he is completely free or will never have such intentions towards girls. There’s just no way of assuring that hiring male teachers over the age of 50 will mean that the girls are safe!

Also, the Indian education system is on the precipice of change. Schools all over the country are hiring younger, newer staff as they believe that the youngsters need newer, better ideas. At such times,  hiring such aged teachers will mean that the disconnect between the teachers and the students will increase. Also, the students will not be exposed to newer ideas and will remain stuck with the older methods of teaching and the older ideals. It might not only hamper their understanding but sometimes, also make them lose interest and find studying boring. As the connect is not that great, it will also not help form a bond at times with the students also being apprehensive of wanting to approach teachers who are much too old.

According to Roopa Sinha, a teacher at a Gurgaon private school, told TOI, While this rule may be founded on noble intentions, I think in practice this would prove to be problematic. By limiting students to contact with only teachers above a certain age, you may be depriving them of the enthusiasm and fresh outlook present in the younger generation of educators that are now enveloping the country. Teachers beyond a certain age may lack that zest, and may be outdated in their approach. I think this is a short-sighted move on the part of the government.” According to Dhirendra Bajaj, aa Gurgaon private school teacher, “I think this rule is quite absurd if you consider the pillars it’s founded on. It implies that all younger male teachers lack that basic moral foundation that makes them dangerous and severely unfit for this position. It also posits that all older teachers have attained a moral capacity that makes them immune to such vile inclinations.”

Crazy or sensible, what do you think?
