New Delhi, July 7: Surrounded by the Western Ghats on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west, Dakshina Kannada region usually receives abundant monsoon showers. The Meteorological department has predicted heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours in Dakshina Kannada district on Friday. As heavy rains hit Kodagu and Malnad region of Karnataka, schools and PU colleges were granted holidays on Saturday. Deputy Commissioner S. Sasikanth Senthil reportedly said that the administrations of Belthangady, Sullia and Puttur taluks of Malnad region and Moodbidri taluk have declared holidays. Heavy isolated showers also lashed the Western Ghats region and the interior parts of Thane including Karjat, Badlapur, Kalyan-Dombivali. The westerly winds are likely to enhance the rainfall over the western coast of India, from Mumbai to Mangaluru. Pune and Nashik will also benefit from the moisture-laden clouds arriving from the Arabian sea. According to weather forecasts, the light showers in Mumbai (recorded at 5-8mm rains) that lasted for 12 hours are expected to increase in a few hours.
