Manali: A 33-year-old Russian woman was allegedly gangraped in Manali area of Kullu district in Himachal Pradesh, stated news agency ANI. A case has been registered in this regard and an investigation into the matter is underway.

Yet another brutal incident of gang-rape and murder was reported in the Kotkhai village of the hill state on July 4. The victim was a 15-year-old girl. While returning from school, she had gone missing. Two days after the incident, police recovered her body from Halaila forests of Kotkhai. On July 13, police arrested six people on charges of rape and murder. Five days later, accused Suraj Singh, a Nepali national, had died in police custody.

In memory of the suspected gang-rape and murder victim, members of the BJP’s youth wing, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) took out a candle march at Jantar Mantar on July 18. The family of the victim claimed that the “real culprits” belonged to high-profile families and have gone scot-free.

In the month of June, a similar incident of gang-raping occurred in the Manali town of Himachal Pradesh. Police said that a Class 12 student was allegedly raped by three youths from Punjab, and two locals for a period of three days. Superintendent of Police, Kullu, Shalini Agnihotri told PTI, “As per law, it is rape even if consensual physical relations were made as the girl is a minor.” An FIR was filed under relevant sections of the IPC and the POCSO Act.
