Shimla: At least five army jawans were feared dead on Wednesday after an avalanche hit them in Namgya region of Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh, stated a report. Rescue operations are being carried out by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and district police.
Meanwhile, news agency ANI reported that one jawan died in the incident while five others are trapped and rescue operation is underway. “Operation underway to rescue 5 jawans trapped in snow after an avalanche hit them in Namgya region of Kinnaur district,” the news agency’s tweet read.
Recently, the Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) issued an advisory for all the avalanche-prone areas including Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti, Shimla, Kinnaur and Kullu districts. These areas in the state are likely to witness heavy snowfall in the upcoming days.
In a similar incident on February 13, a 37-year-old man was killed after being hit by an avalanche in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, police said. The body of Slam Din Gujjar, of Randgali, who was hit by the avalanche near his house, was handed over to his family for last rites, added police.
In yet another incident on February 7, an avalanche hit a police post in the north portal of Jawahar Tunnel in Kulgam district. While 10 cops were able to rush to safety, 10 others were feared to be trapped. Bodies of five policemen and two prisoners were retrieved by the search and rescue team later, said police.
