Himachal Pradesh Suffered Loss of Rs 1,217 Crore Due to Rains, Says CM Jai Ram Thakur

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Tuesday said the state suffered a total loss of Rs 1,217.29 crore during the monsoon rains that also claimed 264 lives. The Chief Minister said that the Public Works Department suffered a maximum loss of Rs 735 crore due to the rains in the form of damage to roads and bridges.

Thakur was presiding over a meeting to review the losses and damage caused by monsoon rains from July 1 to September 17. The Chief Minister pointed out that that the maximum damage was due to heavy rains. However, unplanned dumping of debris was a contributory factor too. He directed the officials to ensure that the debris was disposed of scientifically.

Notably, a total of 33 cloudbursts and 391 landslides occurred in the state and 264 persons lost their lives during the period, which includes 199 deaths due to road accidents caused by damaged roads. In one of the incidents, a five-year-old boy drowned in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district. The body of Mohit Pathania, who drowned at Nurpur area, was recovered and an immediate relief of Rs 10,000 provided to his father, a district official said. The highest casualties were recorded in Solan district (eight), followed by Mandi district (four), three in Kangra district, two in Hamirpur district and one each in Bilaspur and Una districts.
