Tripura On Alert As HIV On Rise In State, 47 Students Dead, 828 Found Positive

Tripura HIV Cases: Tripura is facing a major public health crisis as several students have tested positive for HIV. According to a senior official from the Tripura State AIDS Control Society (TSACS), as many as 47 students have died and 828 others have tested positive for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

5-7 New Cases Being Detected Every Day

Out of 828 HIV-positive students, 572 are alive, while several have left the state to pursue higher education in prestigious institutions. The situation is critical as five to seven HIV cases are being detected every day, according to TSACS.
At a recent media workshop facilitated by the united efforts of the Tripura Journalists Union, Web Media Forum, and TSACS, the troubling facts behind a growing crisis were brought to the fore by the Joint Director of TSACS. The numbers presented were alarming – students from an overwhelming 220 schools and 24 higher learning institutions in the state were immersed in the hazardous world of drug abuse. This troubling trend is believed to be fueling the intensified rise in HIV infections among the population.

HIV Scenario In Tripura Is Deeply Concerning

During a news update, a top official from TSACS shared insights collected from 164 healthcare hubs across the state. The HIV status in Tripura is distressing, with the tally of people registered at antiretroviral therapy (ART) centers hitting 8,729 as of May 2024. Out of these, 5,674, including 4,570 men, 1,103 women, and a single transgender individual, are currently grappling with HIV.

Drug Abuse One Of Major Reason

Bhattacharjee, a senior officer with TSACS, has attributed the rise in HIV cases to the growing trouble of drug abuse, particularly among students from affluent families and government employees. Often, by the time these families realize that their children have fallen prey to drug addiction, it’s unfortunately late for any intervention.
