Lukcnow: A 22-year-old man in Etah district of Uttar Pradesh was allegedly set on fire by his girlfriend’s family over marriage proposal. At present, he is battling for life at a local hospital with over 90 per cent burn injuries. The suspected case of honour killing was reported on Wednesday afternoon when the victim, identified as Dalhai village resident Narendra Shakya, went to meet his girlfriend’s father at his resident in Geva Asadulahpur village following an invitation. As soon as he reached the house, he was tied to a cot. The father and other relatives of the girl then poured kerosene and set him ablaze. “When the victim arrived at their house, the girl’s family members tied him to a cot. Her father along with relatives Dayaram and Umesh poured kerosene on the youth and set him on fire,” senior police officer Sanjay Kumar was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. The police came to know about the incident after being informed by the locals.
While the girl’s father and relative Dayaram have been arrested, Umesh is absconding. They have been booked under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 342 (wrongful confinement), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the IPC, police said.
The youth was reportedly in a relationship with the girl and the duo wanted to get married. However, the girl’s parents were against their relationship.
