Visakhapatnam: At least four persons died after consuming spurious liquor in Gantyada of Visakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh. If reports are to be believed, 15 others are admitted to hospital where they are undergoing treatment.
The incident comes at a time when at least 135 people have lost their lives in Assam hooch tragedy which was reported on February 21 after the workers at Salmara tea garden consumed the spurious liquor. . Over 300 others are said to be admitted to the hospital. As per Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the ‘death toll and the number of people admitted are increasing every minute’.
Meanwhile, Assam Excise Minister Parimal Suklabaidya, while speaking on deaths due to consumption of spurious liquor in Golaghat and Jorhat districts, claimed that a total of 123 people have died till now. Around 125 people are undergoing treatment at the hospitals, he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
In connection with the Assam hooch tragedy, the police have arrested nearly 12 people, including the owners of the illegal country-made liquor factory- Indukalpa Bordoloi and Deba Bora, in Jugibaari area. As per reports, a glass of this illicit liquor was sold for Rs 10-20.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal ordered a probe into the incident on Saturday and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the ones getting treated at the hospital.
The hooch tragedies in Visakhapatnam and Assam have come less than two weeks after over 100 people were killed in various districts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand following consumption of spurious alcohol.
