New Delhi: Soon after a local Delhi court announced the fresh date for the execution of four convicts of 2012 gang-rape and murder case, Nirbhaya’s mother expressed hope that the convicts will be hanged on March 3. However, she was not so happy over the fresh date of execution as this is the third time that the death warrant has been issued.

“I am not very happy as this is the third time that the death warrant has been issued. We have struggled so much, so I am satisfied that the death warrant has been issued finally. I hope they (convicts) will be executed on March 3,” Asha Devi said.

The statement from Nirbhaya’s mother came after the local court in Delhi said that the convicts will be hanged on March 3 at 6 AM. During the hearing of the case, Additional Sessions Judge Dharmendra Rana pronounced the order on a petition seeking issuance of fresh date for execution of death warrants.

While hearing the case, the Patiala House Court issued a fresh date of execution for the convicts. Earlier on February 5, the court had granted five weeks time to the convicts to seek legal remedies and said they cannot be hanged separately as they are convicted for the same crime.

The court had earlier issued a date for the execution of Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh Singh on January 7. Later it was changed to January 22 at Tihar Jail and then it was suspended indefinitely by a Delhi court.

Earlier on Friday, a three-judge bench of the top court, headed by Justice R Banumathi, had dismissed convict Vinay Sharma’s petition, challenging the rejection of his mercy plea by the President. “We don’t see any ground to interfere with the decision of the honourable President,” the bench said. Vinay’s mercy petition was rejected by the President on February 1.
