New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Smriti Irani on Wednesday hit out at Congress Parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor for his remark on ongoing Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, saying it was tantamount to a religious slur. Taking the attack further, the BJP leader said that the question was needed to be asked of Congress President, who “wears a Janeu only when there are polls”, but allows “this attack on beliefs of millions of Hindus across the world.” Also Read - Tripura Congress Chief's Car Attacked Allegedly by BJP Workers, Party Calls For Strike
“For Shashi Tharoor to make a statement which tantamounts to a religious slur. Question needs to be asked of Rahul Gandhi who strategically wears a ‘Jenau’ only when there are polls, as to why he has allowed this attack on beliefs of millions of Hindus across the world (sic),” Smriti Irani said. Notably, Tharoor had tweeted a photo of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath with a host of saints, all wading into Sangam for a holy dip. He captioned it with, “Ganga Bhi Swachh Rakhi Hain Aur Paap Bhi Yahi dhone hain. Iss Sangam Mein Sab Nange Hain. Jai Ganga Maiya Ki. (Everyone’s at fault for we want to keep the Ganga clean but also want to wash our sins in it).” Also Read - Subhra Kundu, Wife of Rose Valley Group Chief Gautam Kundu, Arrested By CBI
Tharoor’s remark met with resistance from other BJP leaders as well. Earlier in the day, UP Minister Siddharth Nath Singh launched a scathing attack on Shashi Tharoor for his tweet.
Singh said, “How will he understand the importance of Kumbh? The atmosphere he’s in, the culture he has been brought up in, don’t understand this.” He also offered a word of advice to Tharoor and said, “You people have committed a lot of misdeeds, take a holy dip in Kumbh and you might be able to repent for your sins.”
BJP spokesman Nalin Kohli said, “This is very unfortunate. An extremely educated and respected person like Tharoor always comes up with such kind of comments related to practices of the Hindu religion.”
Tharoor is known to make controversial statements. Earlier, he has stood by his highly controversial ‘chaiwala’ remark as well by claiming that the BJP could twist any statement made by him. He said, “The BJP is today in a condition that even if you drive safely on the road, they will come and purposely collide with you to make it look like an accident.”
