Hyderabad: A 24-year-old woman has alleged that she received the triple talaq notice from her husband via WhatsApp call after a dowry harassment case was registered against him. The woman lodged a complaint against her husband for giving instant divorce. She claimed that she faced severe harassment after she delivered a girl child this year in February.

The dowry harassment complaint was lodged on November 22 by Sumayya Banu, a graduate from Yousufguda, against her husband Mohammed Muzzammil Shareef, who is a principal of a high school in Tolichowki. “On November 28, he (husband) called me on WhatsApp and abused. He pronounced talaq, talaq and talaq and disconnected the call. I need justice. I came to know that he is looking to get married to another woman,” she said.

As per the complaint filed by the victim, she got married to Muzammil in January 2017. However, within a month of their marriage, her husband started harassing her.

Investigation of the case is underway. Police were working with cyber experts to crack the WhatsApp call data. J Manjula, Inspector of Police of Women’s police station at Central Crime Station in Hyderabad stated that the police team are consulting legal experts to determine if the case can be registered under the recent Ordinance on triple talaq.

A fresh Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 17 to replace an ordinance issued in September and to make the practice of tripe talaq among Muslims a penal offence.

Under the proposed law, giving instant triple talaq will be illegal and void and will attract a jail term of three years for the husband.

Introducing the bill, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said despite the Supreme Court striking down the practice of talaq-e-biddat (instant triple talaq) as unconstitutional, men were divorcing their wives on flimsy grounds and even via Whatsapp.
