In September 2018, Maruti Rao had reportedly assigned some contract killers who hacked to death 23-year-old Pranay Kumar in front of his pregnant wife in broad daylight. Kumar had married his daughter, an upper-caste woman, at Miryalguda town in Nalgonda district.
Rao, opposed to the marriage of his daughter, conspired with other accused and paid Rs 1 crore to eliminate Kumar with Rs 15 lakh paid in advance, the police had said. The seven accused also included two men acquitted in the murder of former Gujarat home minister Haren Pandya. The entire episode was captured on a CCTV camera and sent waves of panic across the region.
