New Delhi: Congress president Rahul Gandhi started his Monday morning with an acrimonious attack on the Prime Minister by calling him a ‘liar’ and asking if he ‘felt ashamed’ while taking credit for work done by him.

“Dear Prime Minister ji, I had laid the foundation for Ordnance factory in Amethi in 2010. Small arms are being manufactured there for past many years. You visited Amethi on Sunday and out of force of habit (lying), said something else. Do you not feel ashamed of yourself?”

Rahul Gandhi’s outburst comes a day after PM Narendra Modi visited Amethi, a Congress bastion in Uttar Pradesh and inaugurated the manufacturing unit for AK-203 rifles, an India-Russia joint venture. In addition, the Prime Minister announced development projects worth nearly Rs 538 crore for Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha constituency.

Stealing credit?

During his visit to Amethi on Sunday, Modi said: “One of the most advanced rifles in world AK-203 will be made in Amethi. It will be made by a joint-venture of India and Russia… this venture was made possible in such a short time by his support.”

While addressing the rally, PM Modi in a veiled attack on Congress said, “Some people keep giving “made in..”, speeches, But Modi walks the talk. We have made “Made in Amethi” a reality. This factory should have come into being 8-9 year back. But the full potential of the initiative was never realised.”

He added how 1,500 people were promised job in Amethi factory but only 200 were given job.

Emphasising that his government expedited the process and has now turned the ambitious plan into reality, PM Modi added, “Forces and their needs were neglected. The factory in Amethi will strengthen the country’s defence and safety… They sat on Rafale for years. We are trying to bring in the jets and some people are trying to object to the purchase. Supreme Court too is supporting the government’s decision on the Rafale deal.”
