Mumbai, March 12: Security have been tightened at the Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International airport as the Pakistan cricket team arrived here in the city following huge drama in the last few days. Shahid Afridi and Co set foot on Indian soil on Saturday evening. The team travelled from Lahore to Abu Dhabi and rested there for some hours before boarding an Etihad flight to arrive at the Eastern Metropolis.
The team left for India early on Saturday for the ICC T20 World Cup 2016 following Indian Government’s assurance on security. Earlier, the Pakistan-India match venue was shifted from Dharmshala to Kolkata following threats from extremists. The extremists even asked the West Bengal government to not stage the match and in case the match is on, they will dig the pitch. Pakistan government was hell-bent on Centre’s assurance even after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee provided the assurance and welcomed the Pakistan team to the city for their ICC T20 World Cup fixture against India.
Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan also suggested that Pakistan team should not play at Dharmshala and the Pakistan team backed out of travelling to India putting the organisers of T20 World Cup in trouble.
Then, ICC held a media conference and moved the venue of the match from Dharamshala to Kolkata. ICC initiative was welcomed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) but Pakistan team still resorted to dillydallying and made up their mind only on Saturday.
