Chennai: Making his inclination towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) public, Tamil superstar Rajinikanth, who is expected to foray into politics, asked in Tuesday which one was stronger – the party standing alone or the 10 parties coming together against it.

Highlights

  • Rajinikanth said that he meant to say that it is the opposition’s perception and it is the people who will decide whether the saffron party is "dangerous".

“On Monday, I had meant opposition parties believe BJP is dangerous. People will decide if BJP is a dangerous party. If 10 people go against one person, you decide who is stronger,” he said.

Rajinikanth’s reference was to the attempts by the opposition parties to form a united anti-BJP front ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Clarifying on his statement on Monday in which he said that the BJP must be a ‘dangerous’ party if the opposition parties think so, Rajinikanth said that he meant to say that it is the opposition’s perception and it is the people who will decide whether the saffron party is “dangerous”.

Asked if the BJP was such a ‘dangerous’ (electorally) party that warranted formation of a mega national alliance against it, the Tamil superstar on Monday said “they (opposition parties) feel that way, then it should be definitely like that.”

Asked about his take on demonetisation, Rajinikanth had said that the implementation of the exercise by the Centre was flawed. He, however, stopped short of criticising the policy itself.

The Tamil actor was one of the earliest to have welcomed the demonetisation drive announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8, 2016.

The actor, known for Hindutva leniency, has in the past backed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s idea of holding simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and state assemblies, saying it would save time and money.

While Rajinikanth announced his entry into politics in December last year, he is yet to officially launch his political party.
