Indo-Pak talks Resume: Foreign Secretaries to engage in bilateral talks on sidelines of Heart of Asia Conference in Delhi on Tuesday

New Delhi, April 25: After several months of suspended dialogue India and Pakistan are expected to renew attempts at peace talks, by engaging in bilateral dialogue on the sidelines of the Heart of Asia conference, media reports said on Monday. The foreign secretaries of the two countries will meet in New Delhi, which is hosting the sixth meeting of the conference, which was established to provide a platform to discuss regional issues, particularly encouraging security, political, and economic cooperation among Afghanistan and its neighbors.

Pakistan Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry will meet with his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar, as an indication of the resumption of the peace talks that had been declared suspended after Pathankot probe logjam. Pakistan’s Foreign Office said in a statement on Monday, “Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry will lead the Pakistan delegation to this meeting.” Also Read: Sushma Swaraj meets Nawaz Sharif on sidelines of Heart of Asia conference

The Foreign Office said Pakistan looks forward to active participation in the forthcoming Heart of Asia meeting, reflecting “our commitment to efforts for promoting long-term peace and stability in Afghanistan”. Pakistan had hosted the confernce last year on December 9, and Indian Foreign Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had met Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the sidelines of the confernce too. Pakistani PM Sharrif had also hosted a lunch for all the delegation at the conference.

Last year, the conference had adopted a forward looking Islamabad Declaration entitled ‘Emphasising Enhanced Cooperation for Countering Security Threats and Promoting Regional Connectivity’. The efforts to resume the Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue at the Foreign Secretary-level hit a deadlock after the terrorist attack on the Pathankot airbase in January that India said was carried out by militants from the Pakistan- based Jaish-e-Mohammad terror group.
