Two guerrillas from Pakistan attacked an army camp in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district on March 21. After six-long-hours operation by two intruders were gunned down by Indian Army personnel. The issue of repetitive terror attacks created a huge uproar in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly and Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed asked Pakistan to take effective measure to curb terror activities on its soil. But the question that arises here is; isn’t Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party-government in the Centre being soft towards Pakistan?
Since the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi, Pakistan has been violating ceasefire agreements especially in Jammu and Kashmir region. When Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif attended Narendra Modi’s historic oath taking ceremony on May 26 last year, it was considered a new beginning in India-Pakistan relationship. On the contrary, the Pakistani authorites have been boosting its ties with separatist leaders of the valley region. Here are the some facts about Pakistan’s interference in the matters of Jammu and Kashmir. 1. Ceasefire violations:
According to the Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar, there were total of 685 ceasefire violations along the India-Pakistan Border in Jammu and Kashmir from June 2014 to January this year. Of the 685 violations, 126 ceasefire violations took place along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) under operational control of Indian Army, while 559 violations took place along the IB under operational control of Border Security Force (BSF). The uncalled-for violations resulted in the death of 24 people, including five Indian Army personnel, three BSF personnel and 16 civilians.
2. Talks with separatists:
The India-Pakistan relations hit a road-block in August last year when the foreign secretaries of both India and Pakistan were scheduled to go ahead with secretary-level talks. The high-profile meeting between the arch-rivals was tipped-off to clear the misunderstanding between the neighbouring nations. In a major back-stabbing incident, the Pakistani authorities initiated talks with separatist leaders in the Valley despite strong objections by Indian authorities that the meeting is interference into India’s internal affairs. Since then the Pakistan’s envoy has been discussing the Kashmir issue with separatists and the dispute still remains at large.
3. Terror attacks:
The recent terror attack on army camp in Samba district is yet another incident of Pakistan supporting terror activities against India. Pakistan’s apathy in countering terrorism seems evident with the release of Mumbai 26/11 attack mastermind Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi earlier this week. The manner in which Pakistan government have failed to punish Lakhvi proves that the country is doing virtually nothing to curb terrorism on their home-soil. Pakistan’s insensitive and lawless actions recently further stress on the point that India’s neighbour is constantly trying to create a sense of hostility in the sub-continent and funding terror outfits.
In spite such evils on the rise and with no curbing in sight, the Indian-government is just issuing warnings to the neighbour. These incidents show Modi-government lacks seriousness and has taken a soft stand towards Pakistan. Now, it is time for India to respond and give the notorious-Pakistan government a stern retaliation which it rightly deserves. If the Pakistan-sponsored terrorism continues with their constant ceasefire violations on Indian border, then India must make them remember the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 and the Kargil War of 1999, and show who the real boss is!
