India-Pakistan tensions: Hours after suspected drone attacks by Pakistan in Jammu and Srinagar, the Ministry of External Affairs saidthe enemy country has violated the ‘bilateral’ understanding’ reached on Saturday afternoon to immediately halt all firings and military actions on land, air and sea.
“An understanding was reached this evening between the DGMOs of India and Pakistan to stop the military action that was going on for the last few days. For the last few hours, this understanding is being violated by Pakistan. The Indian Army is retaliating and dealing with this border intrusion. This intrusion is extremely condemnable and Pakistan is responsible for it. We believe that Pakistan should understand this situation properly and take appropriate action immediately to stop this intrusion,” Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told reporters at a press briefing on late Saturday night.

Additionally, citing government sources, a PTI report said that cross-border firing was reported from the Pakistani side in Akhnoor sector in Jammu and Kashmir, while drones were reportedly spotted in the Pir Panjal area, hours after the India-Pakistan ceasefire was announced. Defence sources said drones came in and firing occurred earlier, but “no firing is happening along the Line of Control now”, PTI reported.
The Foreign Secretary’s statement came after a complete blackout was enforced in several areas of Jammu region in Jammu and Kashmir, and Ferozepur district in Punjab, while blasts were heard in Srinagar city on Saturday night, hours after an India-Pakistan ceasefire “mediated” by the US was announced during late evening hours.
In a post on X (former Twitter), Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah raised serious concerns about the status of the recently announced India-Pakistan ceasefire after explosions were reportedly heard in Srinagar and air defence systems were activated.
“This is no ceasefire. The air defence units in the middle of Srinagar just opened up,” Omar wrote, while attaching a video of what looks like air defence interception activity.
As per an ANI report, India’s air defence intercepted Pakistani drones amid blackout in Srinagar, hours after the enemy country agreed to stop all firing and military action on land, in the air and sea, following a call its DGMO made to his Indian counterpart.
Red streaks were seen and explosions heard as India’s air defence intercepted Pakistani drones amid explosions and a complete blackout in Srinagar, while a total blackout has also been enforced in Pathankot and Ferozepur in Punjab and Jaisalmer and Barmer in Rajasthan, ANI reported.
Earlier, India and Pakistan on Saturday evening worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action.
“India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action,” External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, while adding that India will continue its firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism. “India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so,” he added.
In a press briefing on Saturday evening, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told the media that Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations contacted his Indian counterpart on Saturday afternoon.
“Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) called Indian DGMO at 15:35 hours earlier this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 1700 hours Indian Standard Time,” he said.”
Today, instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to this understanding. The Directors General of Military Operations will talk again on May 12 at 1200 hours,” he added.
