New Delhi, July 05: The state-run Chinese media has not stopped speaking in a grave provocative tone as it has warned India that if the armies of the two countries face each other in Sikkim, India will suffer greater losses than 1962. An editorial in Global Times said that the Chinese army looks down upon the Indian Army and the latter will be kicked out of the area.
“If New Delhi believes that its military might can be used as leverage in the Donglang area, and it’s ready for a two-and-a-half front war, we have to tell India that the Chinese look down on their military power. Jaitley is right that the India of 2017 is different from that of 1962 – India will suffer greater losses than in 1962 if it incites military conflicts,” the article said.
“The Chinese public is infuriated by India’s provocation. We believe the Chinese People’s Liberation Army is powerful enough to expel Indian troops out of Chinese territory. We firmly believe that the face-off in the Donglang area will end up with the Indian troops in retreat. The Indian military can choose to return to its territory with dignity, or be kicked out of the area by Chinese soldiers,” the article read further.
The Indian and the Chinese armies are in a standoff near the Sikkim border over the construction of a road in a plateau that borders China. The Chinese claim that the Indian forces stopped the construction of a road in Doka La, the Indian name of the area. China claims that the area India entered was its territory according to an agreement with the British in 1890.
According to a PTI report, India said it has intervened on the behalf of Bhutan which is India’s trade and diplomatic partner. Bhutan was not the part of the agreement and has a border dispute with China.
China has been threatening India with military action. It has been trying to evoke the memories of the 1962 loss. Indian Defense Minister Arun Jaitley had said that India was not the India of 1962, which meant that India can very well defend itself against Chinese aggression. Indian Army chief Bipin Rawat had also said that India is ready for a two-and-a-half front war.
