Meerut (UP): A soldier of the Indian Army’s Signal Regiment has been arrested in the Meerut cantonment on the charges of spying. The interrogation is currently underway. No more details have been revealed so far. The Army personnel has been arrested a few days after a BrahMos scientist was nabbed on the charges of spying for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). A BrahMos engineer, identified as Nishant Agarwal, was arrested in a joint operation by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terror Squad on the charges of espionage. Agarwal had allegedly been sharing sensitive information related to the BrahMos missile with Pakistani officials. As per the reports, Agarwal had also been leaking information to the United States. Agarwal was allegedly in touch with the Pakistani intelligence operatives through two fake social media profiles running under the names ‘Neha Sharma’ and ‘Pooja Ranjan’ — profiles that are based out of Islamabad in Pakistan.

UP-ATS, while seeking permission to take Agrawal to Lucknow for further investigation, told the court that despite being in a “highly sensitive work”, Aggarwal’s “casual” attitude on the internet made him an “easy target” of the ISI. The UP-ATS has been granted a three-day transit remand by the court for further questioning.



During interrogation, Agarwal admitted that he had secretly downloaded some data related to the supersonic missile from a senior’s computer when he was training at the organisation, anti-terrorism squad revealed.
