When asked if the arrest was related to the BranMos spying case in which an engineer, identified as Nishant Agarwal, was arrested, the anti-terror squad refused to confirm, News18 reported. On October 8, a young scientist working with the BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd (BAPL)’s missile research centre in Nagpur was arrested on alleged charges of spying for Pakistan’s ISI and other countries. Agarwal was allegedly in touch with the Pakistani intelligence operatives through two fake social media profiles running under the names ‘Neha Sharma’ and ‘Pooja Ranjan’ — profiles that are based out of Islamabad in Pakistan. The ATS told the court that despite being in a “highly sensitive work” of BrahMos, Aggarwal’s “casual” attitude made him an “easy target” for the ISI.
During interrogation, Agarwal admitted that he had downloaded some data from a senior’s computer without his knowledge. The alleged spy stole the information when he was a trainee at the organisation.
