New Delhi: The Indian Railways Board and senior ministry officials gave a green signal for the procurement of at least 210 AC rakes for the Mumbai suburban corridor. Stating that the induction of these AC trains will reduce the casualties that occur due to passengers falling from overcrowded trains, Western Railway chief spokesperson Ravinder Bhakar that it will provide comfortable travel for commuters. Bhakar said that the clearance has paved the way for procuring rakes with automatic door-closing arrangements. He said, “Induction of these AC trains will ensure that existing services are augmented with hi-tech rakes.” Also Read - IRFC IPO: Price Band to Subscription Details, All You Need to Know

The new AC trains were presented for a preview on Friday and will be ready for dispatch in the first of January, 2019. As per reports, one of the coaches of the new AC train will be solar-powered. The AC local will also have underslung electrics and higher acceleration.

The other projects that have been cleared include the extension of Harbour line from Goregaon to Borivli. “This 7-km extension will ensure WR passengers can take direct trains to CSMT or Panvel,” an official said. Reportedly, the locals are being procured at cost of over Rs 17,000 crore while the Harbour line extension till Borivli will cost Rs 826 crore.
