New Delhi: The Indian Railways is coming up with a new tablet device that will be given to TTEs across the national transporter’s network. It is called the Hand-Held Terminals (HHTs), and these devices will help TTEs update Indian Railways about the real-time occupancy status of a running train.

Especially waitlisted and RAC ticket holders will be able to confirm their seats with this new device. This will increase the chances of waitlisted and RAC tickets getting confirmed.

A statement by the Indian Railways read, “To begin with, the plan is to introduce these hand-held devices in all Shatabdi and Rajdhani Express trains. We are going to distribute around 550 HHTs across the Indian Railways network and based on the response, the service will be extended to all trains with reserved coaches.”

The new device will provide a number of advantages such as source charts and current booking list through GPRS. It will also download charts of remote locations on the train through GPRS. The device has the provision to mark attendance of passengers in any coach and it will allow for a status upgrade.

Paper charts will now be replaced with e-charts and it will enable computerisation of onboard passenger interface operations.
